It depends of the degree of non-normality. A form of Maximum-Likelihood exist which is developed to be robust to (some) deviation from normality (MLR).

It is available in Mplus, wich also has methods for analyzing skewed data and data witch more resembles a T-distribution (see www.statmodel.com).
