Some info:
1) Complexity science is the study of complex systems.
2) It is a newly emerging field.
3) Most researchers in this field come from other disciplines, like economics, ecology, physics, and public policy.
4) A few researchers or labs in the environmental field would state "complex system" in their profile or "research interest", but not many.
5) In most universities, schools, labs, or research institutes, complexity science is not the main research area.
6) A student who wants to study complex systems might hard to find a Ph.D. advisor who can guide him/her on this.
I admit that this question is more like a personal question than a technical question......
But I just wonder "will someone, some clever guy in Research Gate know it......?"
I will try to answer this question, and post some of my findings.

Check people who are associated with the Santa Fe Institute for Complexity. Those guys are everywhere and are big into complexity in all fields. They also hold yearly workshops.
I agree with Robert that you can check on the researchers at Santa Fe Institute and their collaborators. Besides, I recommend Jordi Bascompte, Ulrich Brose, and Marten Scheffer and so on. There are many excellent researchers and I just name some based on my research field.
In addition to the previous excellent answers, it is advisable to read some books written on this topic from thexauthors from the Santa Fe Institute.

This book will be the game changer on your way towards understanding of this area of research.
This book is advisable to read after some intros into cellular automata followed by agent-based modeling.
Do not hesitate to ask me more about cellular automata models and computational approaches present in biology. Those are my core research areas.
