I have looked at insect populations in different types of vegetation, but I suspect that some vegetation types are mainly populated by sink populations. I would not expect these populations to survive on their own, if nearby source populations went extinct.
What alternatives do we have for identifying if an insect population is able to support itself, or if it is dependent upon constant immigration from other populations for survival? I.e. if it is an source or sink population.
I suspect that the biggest challenges lies in that it is hard to measure reproduction, mortality and migration patterns of insects.
