Groundwater is often found with high silica (SiO2) content. Generally, the silica-rich host rocks are the sources of SiO2 in groundwater. The host rock may contain crystalline (e.g. quartz) or amorphous silica.
From the analysis of groundwater samples, is it possible to identify the source rock - means rich in crystalline silica or amorphous silica?
If you can isolate the SiO2, then it is possible by determining the melting points. Crystalline form has relatively higher melting point than amorphous form. You can also compare the densities.
Dear Angelo - You are right; through the process of isolation of SiO2 from the aquifer matrix, various experiments can be performed such as evaluation of the melting points, petroghraphic characteristics etc. The nature of silica mineral that is crystalline or amorphous can be identified.
But, my question is different. Can the nature of silica minerals in host rocks be identified based on the analysis of water samples?

The silica in the groundwater is mostly regulated by amorphous silica not by quartz and chalcedony. Thermodynamic calculation says the water is saturated or over saturated by quartz/chalcedony and undersaturated with amorphous silica. But, this is not possible as per the kinetics. Quartz and chalcedony are high temperature phases.
