I don't remember most of what I read a month after reading it. When I read as part of a research project, I find it useful to extract whatever information I think I might like to retrieve on note cards, at the same time I read the text. I also find it useful to write by hand, since forming alphabetic letters (and images) in this way involves more complex cognitive processes than poking at a keyboard, so I feel like I'm assimilating the material in a more complete way. The note card format is ideal, because later the information can be rearranged into orderly piles, something that is difficult to achieve with notebooks or highlighted copies. I register the bibliographical data of all my sources in a document made with Word, so I can find things more easily; this also lets me copy and paste from the bibliography into my research reports, papers, articles, chapters and books, so I don't get distracted when the creative process of writing is flowing. If the data is complex I sometimes put together a database, but usually I work from hand-written note cards.

• All of the above are useful pointers especially the bib cards-you can do this on your computer as a file (keep it dated) rather than on small cards. Do your reference list as you start to read, on Endnote, as well as in your file. I read from the Endnote screen and highlight, stop, think, put down my response to main ideas in my bib notes file,and just enter page numbers of bits I've highlighted on endnote. I then do a hard copy of the bib notes and put it in my research folder- so easy All the best

Everything you ask about comes with practice and experience. Any mental work requires a comprehension of the read text and this process does not always work quickly, sometimes it takes some time for a better understanding. So sometimes you need to read the same text several times and at the same time make a brief summary, preferably on paper and your drawings on the key points of the text. From this point of view, you should not care about the loss of time, because it is a continuous process of understanding the received information, which continues at any time of the day, even at night in a dream.

Each researcher finds their technique through experience, using whatever works best for that person and project. In my case, I generally create my note cards with these considerations in mind:

- I prefer 5 x 8 inch cards because they have more space for notes.

- White cards, without lines, give me more freedom to adjust my notes to the space.

- At the top of each card I register complete bibliographical data of the source.

- In the left margin I register the page numbers (separately, so that I can know exactly which page each bit of information or phrase is from, permitting precise references in the work written using these note cards).

- I use colored rectangles in the upper right corner; each color signifies a thematic section of my card file. I file the note cards in cardboard boxes, arranging them by thematic sections. Within each thematic section the cards are arranged alphabetically by author. This way I can extract the cards I need quickly. This is important, since I made about 12,000 cards for my doctoral project, and now there are about 15,000.

- I use a black pen for bibliographical data and notes, a red pen for key words and phrases (so I don't have to read the whole card to know what information is on it), and a green pen for personal notes (so I won't later confuse my thoughts with the source content).

- If I run out of space on a card before finishing the registration of an idea, I flip it over and use the back. If I still need more space, I glue another card to the first, with a drop of white glue in the upper left-hand corner. Since note cards can be shuffled like a deck of cards and rearranged in many ways, it is important that each card (or set of cards glued together) function as a self-contained unit.

- If the information is detailed and complex, sometimes I scan part of the source, print the copy, and glue the pieces I need to the note cards. I do this usually when I am running out of time and need to gather a lot of information fast.

- It is extremely important to use quotation marks with absolute precision on the note cards, as these punctuation signs indicate what words are copied from the source and which are summaries in my own words. Many scholars, students, and professional researchers have involuntarily committed plagiarism because of a lack of precision in the use of quotation marks on their note cards.
