I want to do ortho nitration of 4-subs-benzaldehyde.Anyone please tell me the reported or experimental procedure to synthesis 4-substituted 2-nitrobezaldehyde from 4-substituted benzaldehyde.
The nitration process on the aromatic system substituted at p-position occured at (0 to -5) with more than one direction .the nitration may occur at meta(3) position as major product and ortho (2) ,3,5 as miner . please see this link ;http://chemeducator.org/bibs/0017001/17100094.htm
for 4-substituted 2-nitrobezaldehyde you have to start with 2-nitro-4-substituted toluene & then oxidize methyl group partially using mild oxidizing reagent..
A suggestion: please carefully consider the activating/directing properties of the substituent in the 4-position. Actually, this is another question very hard to answer briefly without knowing the characteristics of that key substituent.
You certainly must protect the aldehyde asHNO3 is also an oxidant. Depending on your substituant (+M) you may not get the substitution in ortho of the aldehyde.
