I want to diluted water sample. The sample volume(10 ml), the reading give me out of range( the range 30 mg/l). amount of Nitrate I have more than 30 mg/L. How i can dilute the water sample to get reading??/
If the result is out of the measuring range, you need to make a decimal dilution. This means you take 1 ml of the initial sample and add 9 ml demineralized water. Repeat the measurement for this 10-fold diluted solution and multiply by 10 the obtained result. You should do the same for any successive dilutions (if necessary to dilute more), take 1 ml of the previous dilution, add 9 ml demineralized water and multiply the result with the final dilution factor.

for any analysis if in case the measurement of any parameter is beyond the range of detection is better to go for 10 times dilution and 100 time dilution and check for the consistency !! in some parameters the improper sampling results in wrongful results!!

Refer to Carmen's answer. I would add, that the diluted sample should be at least 40% of full scale ie. 12 mg/L in your case. The water you use to dilute the sample with should not add to the reading. You can check this by measuring the dilution water as a sample (blank).

I strongly agree with Carmen Mateescu answer.
And to obtain the original concentration, you just need to multiply the diluted sample concentration with the dilution factor.

Do the dilution in a test tube and better use micro pipette for better accuracy.
I also like to appreciate Dr Carmen Mateescu for his answer. In addition I also like to add that dilution of sample is generally done on the basis of range of measurement of a component by the instrument and the degree of dilution could be done in such a way that our final result fall within this range.
