Patents on their own do not bring in revenues. Countless inventors are on poverty street or die poor. The invention must result in a saleable product that attracts buyers. If you work for a university and invent something whilst working at the university, your IPR ( intellectual property rights) are automatically transferred to the university as part of the terms of employment, unless there is an explicit clause you have negotiated prior to taking up employment.
That said, countless patents do not bring in revenues unless converted to products. They cost money -- filing for patent costs money>
At the same time there are patents on platform technologies like CRISPR (Gene editing technology) Cabilly Patent (Expression of immunologic ally active molecules), Carter Patent (Antibody Engineering-Humanization), Potelligent Technology (Defucosylation), Enhanz Technology (Hyaluronidase) and many more which applies to many products. Hence patent of this kind has a very high commercial value. But again how well the monetary gain is for the inventors that depends on the terms of employment as Phil has pointed or the deal between the inventors (if they are the applicant) with the organization who needs to buy the patent.
enarearemshouenergTechnological change, particularly in the energy field, should be the most powerful engine to drive the next economic revolution throughout the world. And the largest amount of patents should be emerge in the area of low-carbon or green technologi
Along with the teaching and research work that we do in the university, it should be foreseen to patent the technological results that can be obtained (forming part of a product or procedure) to be commercialized, being able to reach this is what makes I can get money back and be able to compensate the expenses that we had investigating. You never know how far the application of an invention can go. There are inventions that were made at a time when their practical use, as a mouse, and the validity of the patent expired before its massive application and did not reach the inventor's pocket. Very important that was mentioned above about knowing about this theme, and to leave clauses in our contracts where we can enjoy the profits of which we are direct authors.
