I have past 5 milestones (2500, 3000, 3500, 4000 and 4500) reads with only a change in my score of 0.2 and that was 800 reads ago. My score would increase with every milestone of 500 reads but it does not do that anymore, can you explain, or is this just a 'glitch' right now?

You improve your ResearchGate Score not through people reading your material, but by helping other people in ResearchGate.net.
The traditional idea of a scholar is someone whose material is widely read. But real Research requires scientists etc. to work together and help each other, and so the ResearchGate Score is designed to encourage you to help others.
My observation is that the increase in the score decreases exponentially with the number of number of reads, citations and recommendation of your work. The unit increase of the score decreases os your number of reads, citations and recommendations decrease. I have observed that when my score was around 5, a single added publication, a citation or few publication reads or recommendations would have a significant effect on the score. However now I add 3 publications and the score increases by only .1 or .3
This score will remain nonsense until the algorithm is published & evaluated with multiple examples. This is a sharing platform that is judging our performance in a obscure way. There is some hope. Apparently, there are plans to change the score algorithm. I was asked yesterday if I would like to participate in evaluations of the new changes.
I had 700 reads, and suddenly the number decreased to 198. What does it mean??????????????

it is scientific based research gate, so citations are important. Lot of readers can be anyone, but if people are academics, they might then give citation to your work, if it contributes what they are writing.
And then, many different reasons might contribute for people to get interested on your published context and read it. For example, the readers can come from other backgrounds than from academia, or they might be teachers looking for materials to be pointed out for their students and then students will read the papers too.
In short, you get more valuation from references, but you should not expect referencing, based on how many times your articles have been read by Research Gate.

RG Help Center is saying: ...RG score is relative, it can go up or down depending on the activity and scores of other ResearchGate members. This means it takes the scores and interactions of every researcher into account to give a relative rating of your contributions...
Janis Coffin why worry about your score? It is of no importance in real life. The RG score is absolutely no measure / indicator of a researcher's quality / experience / excellence.
Maybe you should also deep study the general guideline given by RG itself?

Dear Janis Coffin your question is easy to answer when looking at the "research Overview" on your RG profile. It shows that you are not really participating in Q&A on the platform (2 questions and 1 answer). Always keep in mind the RG is a scientific social media platform. Thus it's not only about posting research items but also about interacting with other RG members. On your profile page your research is in the fields of "Primary Care Medicine, Public Health and Practice Management". Just check the Questions section on RG for terms related to your areas of expertise and try to answer e.g. 5-10 questions every day. This will definitively have a positive effect on your score.

To increase your RG score, answer as many new questions as possible; add new research items especially research or review papers, chapters, books, etc. published in reputable journals recognized by RG; ask as many questions as possible; get followers. You have to be doing all these consistently
RG Score is computed based on your academic activities especially answering questions
Also ensure your research items, answers, and questions get reads and recommendations, especially from RG members with high RG score.
Actually, it is very difficult to explain the actual thing why the RG score are increasing a little or decreasing. However, I think, it depends on the activity of the respective RG members. And, it may also depends on the relative activity of all the members.
I had the impression that, the RG score will increase substantially if your publication is indexed by SCI and Scimago.

The score is updated only once a week. Also (I think) the amount of popularity your publications start to gather, will also affect to the score you receive from the Research Gate platform.

In general, the higher is the IF of the publication you add on RG, the higher is the increase in your score (from a personal estimate, the score increase 0.05 for a publication with IF 1, 0.1 for IF 2..and so on. I have no idea for the other scores (such as answer and question). I'm not sure if adding a project counts in some way
I had similar issue in the past, different reasons were giving. I think we need full explanations on how the scoring algorithm works. This will enable users of RG to know where to put efforts.

RG scores take things like asking and answering questions and recommendations into account. Yet, I think we should be focusing more on how this platform serves us as researchers, for instance giving the opportunity to ask and benefit from more experienced researchers and promote our research (RG individual research reads and recommendations), and we should focus less on the overall aggregate RG score.
The lack of changing score you described may be a system glitch, what really matters though is the impact you have made with 4,500 reads, which means you have already made a difference.
The algorithm looks at how your peers receive and evaluate your contributions.
In contrast to more traditional metrics, the RG Score focuses on you, an ever-growing community of specialists.

It is not a problem, it is just the way RG score works. IT is combination of multiple things. Reads is just one part of the big picture.
It is affected by communications in the ResearchGate website more than other factors: Reads, Recommendations, Answers, Questions, ... The more your score is, the less change happens for it due to an event. For example, 2000 reads increased your score by 0.2 while it increases the score of a researcher with RG 50 just by 0.01.
Dear Janis Coffin if an increase of your score is important for you, you should try to interact more frequently with other RG members, i.e. participate more regularly in Q&A. Please keep in mind that RG is a scientific social media platform and not a pure science forum. Thus in order to increase your score you need to find the right balance between posted research items (publications) and Q&A. For example, try to answer 1-2 technical questions from your field of research every day. Then your score will steadily increase. To find suitable questions, just use the "Search" function of RG and look for topics which match your expertise. Then click on "Questions". Good luck! 👍

Indeed, the criteria for granting their scores to the reviewers, etc. of "RG" they are quite airtight and cryptic; In any case, if you want to increase your score, I advise you to answer the Questions that other Researchers ask and, in the same way, ask some yourself ... It works!

The fact that the RG score is relative to other RG scholars, I feel, removes the stress from it.
It is not as if you have submitted a piece of work and the marker doesn't like it.
But even though your interaction with others on RG has an effect, your score also rests on what others have done.
So, it's nice to look at it week by week and 'pat yourself on the back' if it's gone up, but if it's gone down, you can feel that it isn't completely your own fault!
It is not about the number of 'reads' you have. Having a lot citation of your articles will boost your scores in RG. So, better not to bother members bringing useless questions. Work on your reputable publications which going to be cited promptly.
It is not about readings, questions or others, what matters is to produce without being aware of others. If your work is good and according to the investigative situation, you will receive many citations and it is the activities that the other investigators carry out with respect to your work that will give your record a score every day.
Ok, as I understand asking Qs and Answering the Qs are score-worthy.
In general, the best way is the strong increase of positive interaction such as: Publications, Questions, and Answers as soon as possible --> Increase the RG score. Have a good day!!!

So far, nobody was able to understand the sense of RG Score. The RG team did not publish the formula for RG Score, and nobody cracked this formula down. It makes sense to look instead to Research Interest (RI) or Total Research Interest (TRI) score.
The RG team did not publish the formula for the RI score either. However, I got a meaning of it in my recent publication (Victor Torvich, The meaning of Research Interest (RI) in ResearchGate, https://vtorvich.com/meaning-of-RI-in-RG.). The article was published on my website - https://vtorvich.com. As it appears, the RI is a direct function of the researchers' interest in the author's publications.
RI is DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL to the number of Citations and one/third of the number of Publication's Reads and Recommendations.
I'm facing similar issues. Got over a thousand views last month with very little change in research interest. Can any one here help?
For the last three weeks, there was no change in my research activity. My Research Interest (RI) did not change either. Still, my RG Score fluctuated within the 1.5% range over an average value of RG Score in those three weeks.
My conclusion is that, probably, RGS Score fluctuations within at least 1.5% are due to factors outside the author's activity.
For example, an RG Score algorithm could include dependency on some average, over some or all authors on RG site, RG Score weekly change.
Anyway, I think, at a first approximation, we could ignore RG Score fluctuations within at least 1.5%.

Lol, the same thing happens to me. I believe it all boils down to your affiliation, because people without affiliation or a university registered email may have a 100 times more reads, recommendations and followers than a person with those things, they will still lag behind by a lot in the RG score.
That's cause RG thinks that you can only be a researcher if you're affiliated. I think that's kinda dumb, but whatever.
Despite increasing citations and reads, mine is unchanged. I think it has to do with your affiliation and the number of followers you have. So, in a sense it is more like social media and, if you get a lot of 'likes' or your co-authors have a lot of followers, then you get a bump from that.

I think the point is like Maryann Harris mentioned,
RG is platform for sharing knowledge, finding audience for your publications and achieving to reach reads for your questions and answers.
Also citations to the publications, which are listed in RG are important as high impact research visibility is a positive feature for the RG platform.

Well ResearchGate is social media for academics, researchers and other like minded people. The system rewards for knowledge sharing.
