Most of the contaminants are greases and/or particles. It should not be extremely expensive (like SIMS, MS, XPS) and be compatible with a production environment. It should give a quantitative measure so we can monitor the state of the surface in time. Contact angles measurements will probably not give enough information about the degree of contaminants.. A simple FTIR hand scanner ??? Any ideas are welcome.
How about Using AFM (atomic force microscopy). You can use its non contact mode or tapping mode. You will obtain surface morphology roughness and phase identification.

I think that it is strongly depending on which accuracy are you looking for; if a qualitative or semi-quantitative measurement is necessary FTIR, contact angle, o refraction index measurements can be fast and cheap.
Otherwise you need a more accurate, time consuming and expensive technique. XPS by my opinion is the best one to find grease as well Raman spectrometry. finally thermal analysis like DSC or TG can also be considered to identify grease and oil.

thanks for all your reactions. It is for quality purposes in a production environment and I think that contact angle and FTIR like some of you confirmed is indeed the best solution. Furthermore I found a company who also can deliver a svcanner for a particle count. I also found a simple FTIR scanner. So I think a combination of these techniques will do the job.
