The German Broadcasting Archives (Deutsches Rundfunkarchiv, DRA Berlin) has a huge collection of reproducible sounds (natural, artificial, hybrid), often used in radio and TV productions.

Maybe the noisex database or perhaps the BBC sound effects library.

There is also the Freesound database (http://www.freesound.org) which contains all kinds of sounds, including real-world environmental sounds, both at high and low recording qualities. The sounds are usually labeled with tags, which might help in collecting a good subset to work with.
