and play with it, it is easier to generate different hatches.Just play with the different patterns and options available in it.

My answer is not exactly what you asked but still I think it may help you.
Previously, I had the same problem. Although, I succeeded to develop Bar graphs with desired hatches and patches, I decided not to use MATLAB for developing such graphs. I learned that MATLAB provides restrictions on options to modify the graphs; which I found somehow difficult . Therefore, I moved to excel 2010 (may use higher version as well). There you will find large number of options to generate such graphs. Even quality of graphs is very very good. You may change background, borders, Stand errors, hatches, gradients, color fills etc easily after views few online videos available on youtube. You have options to generate complex and multiple graphs also. For example, you have to 3*3 data. You can show the data in single graph. You can fill pictures in the bars if required. There are many other features which you will encounter once you start producing graphs in excel. I suggest not to use excel 2007 for this, as the options are limited.
