I respect your opinion despite the fact that my personal opinion is diagonally opposite to it. Actually, there are certain disciplines which has to be taught through story-telling most of the time. Marketing Management is one such discipline. In fact, in all social sciences there is no fixed logic. The logic varies from time to time and that is why, in such disciplines the teacher has to make long speeches to explain the diversity of the logic.

Dear Anamitra Roy this quite true for one simple reason as per plato himself. Teachers' role is not to convey knowledge to their students! instead, they should help their students acquire knowledge! I agree with you that this idea may not be applicable in every case. Of course there are different types of students. Not every student would like to learn by listening to stories. But in many cases, I have seen this that story-tellers have become great teachers. In fact, as a student, I liked such teachers. Today, when I teach my students, I try to deliver education through this method. But of course, there are exceptions to it.

The important thing to remember about stories is that they are a narrative. The great tales were not told by bankers, politicians, or farmers. They were told by the philosophers, priests, and writers. So long as the spoken word has been heard stories have been told. Great educators weave anecdotes, humour, seriousness and a myriad of other emotions into a good lesson.

You have raised a vital point by stating the need to link reel things and real things. I think this is a matter of habit. When one tries doing this for years, then it becomes a habit. So the person who is doing this, actually does not need to put in any conscious effort. When I was pursuing post graduation in TASMAC School of Business, I opted for Marketing specialization. I had a paper called SMCRM (Service Marketing & Customer Relationship Management).That paper used to be taught by a visiting professor. His name is Mr. S.K. Dasgupta. He was a MBA from Harvard and a retired Vice -President of a private sector bank. I saw him doing this very easily.

I think this is true, because a good professor is, in fact, a professional story-teller. In this moment, it comes to my mind the figure of Joseph Campbell, the great north american mythologist.

His colosal work, The Masks of God, is a very interesting example of Campbell's story-telling habilities. We can read this book not only as a great academic work, but also as a story plenty of adventures and references to literature and ancient history.

There is a passage that illustrates this point very well: "The legend of the destruction of Kash", where Campbell remembers a story narrated by an elder camel raider, who accompained the anthropologist Leo Frobenius.

Or we can say the same about James Frazer and his most known book, The Golden Bough, where he tell us about ancient kings who cannot sleep because someone have to kill them and continue with the rite.

We can offer more examples, but that will be redundant. In few words, i do believe that story-tellers are great professors, and professors are, in essence, story-tellers.

Dear Dr Anamitra Roy, wonderful question. Many great teachers and philosophers have used story telling as a method of teaching. Great political leaders, religious leaders, spiritual leaders attract huge masses by telling fictional, factual and other types of stories.

I do not want to name the present day leaders but every one knows how popular they are (and their stories).

Historical personalities like Lord Buddha, Osho, Mulla Nasruddin, Abdul Kalam, and many others are famous for their story telling.

But, I doubt whether all story tellers can be good teachers...

Some may be politicians, some may be farmers...

Also, all good teachers and not good in telling stories.

I found a very valid point in your writing. You wrote that all good teachers are not good in telling stories. There is no doubt about this point. The truthfulness of this point also tells me that story-telling is not a necessary attribute of a good teacher. A good story-teller may or may not become a good teacher. Therefore, whether a good story-teller will become a good teacher or not, depends on other factors also. Thus, it may be concluded that there is no direct relation as such between story-telling and being a good teacher.

Dear Dr Anamitra Roy. This is really good question. The role of narratives is important in all teaching. Using them makes teaching more interesting, So all teachers should develop their story-teller skills. It is also important to develop rhetorical skills for convincing students about the importance of the contents that you are teaching. The power of narrartives and rhetoric should been emphasized also in teacher education.

Yup agreed ....we should tell some correlated instances and stories to students when we teach something....like teaching externalities, marginal private cost, social cost we should corelate these topics by environment issues by using some stories, instances and videos

Dear Anamitra Roy You have asked a very important question from a didactic point of view. I already have nearly 25 years of experience as an economy and history teacher at universities in Poland and it seems to me that after completing 26 years of education at all levels and graduating with a master's degree in two different schools, separate fields of study, I have quite a good knowledge of this subject :) Storyteller teachers are a real treasure for a school, the greater the treasure if that teacher is teaching science. It is quite easy to tell interesting stories in history, philosophy or religion, but introducing emotional stories into a lecture in math, physics or economics is a great skill. I was lucky and had great pleasure a long time ago, in the years of my education at the railway technical college in Ostrów, to be taught mathematics for 5 years by a man of incredible charisma. Our teacher, Master of Mathematics, Zdzisław Kaczmarek, was a human being "from another planet". As we know, teaching mathematics is usually a boring procedure for solving problems and explaining theorems on a blackboard with chalk in hand. Master Khaki (this is the pseudonym of Kaczmarek) was never boring and with his stories he moved and motivated to learn the secrets of mathematics from every one of the 30 students of our mechanical class. What is most important for this chat teaching to be effective? - the story must be adapted in terms of perception to the students, - the story should be told in the language of the students, i.e. slang that they understand perfectly (not scientifically "stiff" language), - the story must attract attention and concentration, it should refer directly to the main topic of the lesson, - it should be witty (with a certain dose of humor), - it is worth using body movement and gesticulation, and for all this you need to use the voice scale well to cause an electrifying effect of attracting attention and understanding the essence of the matter. To sum up, thanks to unconventional maths lessons from Kaczmarek, the subject that was my "curse" in primary school and I could barely pass it with a positive grade, became my favorite. Mathematics is still my favorite subject of study today, especially financial mathematics. After over 30 years, I believe that what M. Kaczmarek taught us in the technical school of communication (5 years of advanced mathematics course) was so significant and great that later, while studying finance and corporate accounting, I was amazed to discover that something new and innovative was already I did not know either the domain of functions or solving systems of equations, derivatives or the theory of probability. I love storyteller teachers, provided that their story is only a strictly referring to the topic, an inspiring addition to the content :)

It is great to know about your personal experience of the great story-telling teacher about whom you have written in this thread. Salute to him. It was even great to know the impact the great teacher had on you. He made you to love a discipline of study that perhaps you hated at one point in this life only. That clearly explains the impact of story-telling teachers on the students.

You raised another important point when you wrote that it is easy to become a story-teller teacher in certain disciplines, while it is almost impossible in certain disciplines.

I teach Marketing. In this discipline, it is relatively easy to become a story-teller teacher. The challenge for the teacher is to develop stories in synchronization with the topics that she/ he is teaching (once again a point that you have raised).

Dear Anamitra Roy, thank you for your valuable contribution and I am personally honored to have been able to share some of my personal experiences from 26 years of school education. My great math teacher, a real role model, has been dead for 5 years. On December 17th, we celebrated the 5th anniversary of the death of Zdzisław Kaczmarek, MA in Mathematics from Ostrów Wielkopolski. In my long education and obtaining 5 prestigious professional diplomas (the first engineer of internal combustion vehicles in 1992), a few such storyteller teachers helped. I had the honor of meeting most of them at the University of Poznań while studying history, specializing in economic history, and I am friends with them to this day (Prof. R. Pacanowska, Prof. M. Franz, Prof. S. Kowal). I particularly agree with your belief that storyteller teachers make a great contribution to inspiring people to deepen their interest and ultimately to raise the level of education in a given field. I will never forget the fantastic lectures on the methodology of sciences conducted by prof. Wojciech Wrzosek (1995). The subject was very difficult, and the professor's requirements were also extremely high. However, whoever attended and listened carefully to Professor Wrzosek was able to understand and master the difficult material thanks to his inspiring lectures. Working as a teacher since 1997, I find that the vast majority of teachers are unfortunately technocrats, some self-centered and conducting classes as if they were doing it for themselves and not for students. It is a difficult challenge for school managers to make children and students love these institutions, since in my opinion most teachers make many elementary mistakes in their approach to students and are later surprised that at the end of the course almost no one is present in the classroom, and that they receive critical assessments in evaluation questionnaires, I found examples of academics who tried to sue me to a common court for issuing a critical negative assessment of their classes and for giving a negative assessment in a survey for a given lecture. Thus, inept teachers use a form of intimidation and mobbing against students. Storyteller teachers have a distance to each other, even if they are not super competent teachers in their subject, they are still extremely useful, create a good atmosphere at school and inspire education.

I read what you have written and I read it quite a few times. Your personal experience with so many story telling greats is fascinating to read. For me, the essence of your writing was how you explained the importance of story telling teachers, even if they may be lacking in technical knowledge sometimes. I hope I'm not repeating a response from above, but a teacher has to be able to hold the attention of those to be taught. It might be that storytelling does this, or it might be the clarity or understandability. Or the ability that some teachers have to make their pupils feel that he or she is talking to them, personally, even though there may be a classroom full of students.
