Dear colleagues, I would greatly appreciate your opinion on one matter, that I've been struggling with. I'm a novice in the field.
As part of my study I measured HRV of my participants at rest and then at performing different tasks. I use RMSSD and RSA (spectral) as indices of HRV. What i find during the speech task is that for majority of the participants the HRV decreases, as compared to baseline. That is in line with other research. What puzzles me is following: The correlation between the change (Delta) score with self-reported negative emotion is negative. I'm confused how to interpret this finding. In case when I am comparing individuals whose HRV level increases overall, saying that one who reports negative emotion, their change is smaller, makes perfect sense i.e. probably indicating poor responsiveness and hence negative emotion. But what does this relationship indicate in the context of the overall decrease of HRV in response to the task? Is it not reverse then? The smaller the decrease, the better it should be. Or the direction does not matter, but the magnitude of the change?
Any reply or advice as to where I can find answers would be very useful.
Thanks for time and consideration!
