A bacteria showing optimum growth at pH 6 but can resist up to pH 5 so can we say them acidotolerant/ moderate acidophilic/acidoresistant. What would be the appropriate term for this bacteria. Your comments are valuable .
While observing growth in a bit acidic pH we can never conclude an organism to be acidophilic. Even almost all neutrophilic bacteria can survive up to an extent in acidic or alkaline pH, although their optimum growth is obtained only in optimum bacteriological pH (around pH 7.4). Think about our intestine, even in places in the intestine where pH is not neutral , but many neutrophiles are surviving. Strictly acidophiles grow in pH as low as ~3.
