From my literature survey i have found nitro is more electron deficient than nitrile. But my Ru hydride catalyst is selective towards nitrile than nitro in reduction. i want to know the role of catalyst in chemoselectivity.
It makes sense. The reduction catalyzed by ruthenium hydrides goes through a hydrometallation step, very well described in the literature. This process does not takes place over nitro groups. For this kind of reduction, you should use Fe/HCl but you should see about the compatibility over the nitrile group.
