If you want to create a proof of concept, you will have to either build the system or process data acquired by the intended sensor system. (This might be data acquired by some off-the-shelf sensor system - if available - thus avoiding the need to build the sensor.)

For such a system I consider it necessary to demonstrate the capability to cope with variations in lighting, sensitivity and alike (as I guess these will have a significant impact on the results).
