For instance: the german policy of turn-off its nuclear power plants will affect its energy security, because of either the country must invest more in renewable (a lot) or consume more fossil fuels (gas) from countries that at this time are not the best friends. So, the policies have influence in energy security.
In the era of post-restructuring, multiple decision makers that all of them try to improve their profit can cause system to be operated in less security margin. Hence, an up-down strategy for coordination players in specific green and conventional resources is needed. Also, a preventive and corrective congestion management strategy should be developed. Also, we should take a look at reliability of the infrastructures such as gas and information systems. They simply could affect the security of power systems.
The greatest threats to energy security come from the environment. As the climate continues to destabilize, hotter summers, stronger storms, and colder winters, human comfort and security puts increasing demands on energy. Mostly HVAC but also infrastructure maintenance, food production and increasing conflicts, over water, arable land, and control of resources. Policies that help to promote environmental stability over the long term are our best defense. For example, agricultural policies that protect topsoil from erosion, will also help to prevent tornadoes, by denying circular winds the easy access to friable mass necessary to become destructive. Land use policies which promote natural hydrological balance, such as parks, and especially marsh land can mitigate both drought and high atmospheric temperatures. Residential policies which promote trees and shrubs over grass for lawns or open public spaces like roadway medians, will reduce demand for energy, often to the degree that makes renewable sources cost-effective.
In short energy is often confused with fuel, as opposed to a ubiquitous environmental resource that when managed effectively can solve many intractable problems.
Thank you Gare Henderson!!! as being student of Environmental Science I was looking for this answer. Besides this I think concepts like Urban Agriculture (which will help in self sustainability of our cities up to certain extent) and new renewable energy plans like UK has adapted recently (of promoting wind energy in buildings and subsidizing them). And I reckon that Governments of the whole world should tie up to face future challenges like (global warming, shrinking arable land, climate change, population growth, etc.). Basically two things can be done for now, 1.) Prolong the use of fossil fuel by using efficient engines, using less etc. and 2.) Gradually promote Green energy resources.
