Dear researcher, I am designing a survey questionnaire.what is the appropriate scale for the response. what is the significance of "Five Point Likert scale " over "seven Point Likert scale".
This is not merely a statistical question. In part it is a behavioral question. A nine point scale would be better for almost all kinds of analysis, if all the choices have meaning. However, I hope you can find someone who can answer (or a reference) concerning the behavior of the people surveyed. You might ask 'how are they going to respond to different numbers of choices?'. Theoretically, more choices should have more information content. But are people really going to choose between 6 and 7 on a 9 point scale in a meaningful way?
