The Dimensionally Extended nine-Intersection Model (DE-9IM) is a topological model and a standard used to describe the spatial relations of two regions (two geometries in two-dimensions, R2), in Geometry, Point-set topology, Geospatial topology, and fields related to computer spatial analysis. Since the spatial relations expressed by the model are topological they are invariant to rotation, translation and scaling transformations. How we can use it in Spatial modelling which is a application of GIS?

Here's some info regarding DE-9IM and where it can be used.
You can use the DE-9IM functions when you are doing spatial modelling.
DE-9IM contains a set of functions (predicates) such as e.g. Equals, Disjoint , Touches , Contains , Covers , Intersects , Within , CoveredBy , Crosses , Overlaps . You may reconize some of the function names from their corresponding functions in ArcMap or other GIS software packages.
Anyway, these functions always take two spatial objects as input (i.e. point-, line- or polygon-layers) and return a spatial object as result (which in some cases can also be the empty space). Some of the functions have restrictions when applied between different types of spatial objects.

These functions can be used to create topology rules within your Geographical database. For instance, say that you are maintaining the GIS database of the city planning office. This database contains all the property units, buildings, roads, parks, sidewalks, etc of your city. When you get information that property unit owner has decided to split his property into two different property units, you will need to alter the content of your geographical database accordingly. When you divide the initial property unit, you will create two new ones. In this case, you do not want for the two new property units to "overlap" each other or their neighboring property units at any point. They should have no common areas. To achieve this, you could set a topology rule (by using the corresponding DE-9IM function) within your GeoDBMS that does not allow two spatial objects of the same type (polygons) and category (property units) to overlap.
