What is the connection between physics Nobel prize winners(2016) and Mathematics?
David J. Thouless, F. Duncan M. Haldane, and J. Michael Kosterlitz won 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics for their theoretical discoveries using topological concepts.
Their work pioneered a new understanding of phase transitions of matter, paving the way for current and future work with topological insulators, superconducting materials, and other applications in condensed matter physics.This using the mathematical concepts of topology.

I am tempted to believe there are differences between Physics Noble Prize Winners and that of Mathematics. This can be explained on the basics of the works of mathematicians and physicist. "There are two main differences, firstly the scope of the subjects, and secondly the approach taken. The scope of physics is reality, the universe, natural phenomena. And it approaches attempting to explain this by creating theories which produce predictions which are tested by experiment, using the scientific method. The scope of mathematics is everything you can imagine or could be imagined, whether or not it has any connection to reality. And it attempts to say something about it by creating theorems based on chains of logical reasoning, not on experiments and not using the scientific method. There is a small amount of overlap between theoretical physics and applied mathematics, and there are some people who have done work in both fields, but these are negligible when we're talking about the main differences. I only mention it because if I don't then someone will complain." (Gay, 2013)
