I am working for a Animal feed producing and exporting company in Pacific region.
We have Identified that there is good market for seed. We are willing to study the market share and the seed requirement to be supplied in the level of fulfilling the need of the farmers.
Can any one suggest me a simple method to handle this with limited budjet.
Hi Subramaniam. Wonakkam. While working as agro-marketing research consultant of GTZ in Nepal, I had faced a similar situation in 1997. On the basis of my experience and anecdotes, I would suggest you to first check if some previous studies are available; if yes, so good, as now you can start off on that basis. Generally, previous studies are not available in this area, at least it applied to my country Nepal.
If not, you pls perform an analogous study, perhaps, relating to the vegetable seed sold (focusing on the supply side rather than demand side). It will save your budget and time required to configure your actual study. Good luck and Nandri.
Investigate the key factors:
1) current cultivars of vegetables produced for the market,
2) Companies - breeders and Seed producers, seeds distribution network
3) strong and weak theatures of the cultivars from this list (vegetation time and harvesting time, etc.), shelf life, resistance to enviromental stresses, diseases and pests,
4) Current and past local trends in vegetables consumption and vegs cultivation (based on previous study as Arhan Sthapit suggested)
Yes, Alex At the moment I am confined in to the current cultivars. But it is necessary to identify the competitors in the business and there strength and weeknesses
Of course yes. You may consider also carrying out a preliminary SWOT analysis of the viability of proposed project by identifying all the possible factors (both positive and negative, present and potential) that can influence the project out come.
I am facing difficulties is getting the actual competitor information. Is there is any way of getting those information without a direct approach?
Visit open markets and identify producers- retailers. They can be the best source. From them you can get a lot of info including if they save seeds themselves and what deseases they are facing and how they remedy them. That will lead you to tolerant hybrids also. Check which veggies might be absent from the market. Also you'll get info for market players, in the form of gossip not scientific but you can draw rough conclusions. Then go on a farm tour to verify your first info.
