The opposite of practice or praxis is not science, but theory. Academic research is theoretical, i.e. it is about archiving standard knowledge, not about new learning processes. This gap between  knowledge and learning will be shortended by exponential knowledge automation, i.e. the relationship between academia and practice will be redefined as exponential technologies progress. New types of knowledge/learning institutions will emerge that are more fit to the rapidly changing body of knowledge and skills, propelled by e-learning-methodology.

By doing research on local issues to develop alternative solutions, creating innovative multipurpose products at cheaper cost, solving medical issues, etc.

The utility of the Research depends upon the discipline and field of your research. There are a number of research findings which may come with novel results but do not have any utility in general. Some other research may have direct implications for change in the current knowledge, subsequently beneficial for society. Researchers have to focus on creating a utility of their research which may have wider implications to change the life of people in a positive manner.

Publication makes the information available for use in practical applications.

Research needs to be designed to respond to the needs of society. The concept of valorization needs to be uppermost. I am involved in research funding in Kenya through the National Research Fund (NRF www.researchfund.go.ke)  has a responsibility to ensure that research trainees (both at Doctoral and Masters levels) are conversant with modern concepts and principles of research, and are able to implement and direct projects through multi-disciplinary teamwork approach. The research trainees must be able to analyze their research outcomes to influence policy and effectively utilize contributions of other disciplines such as social sciences, economics and development-oriented studies.

 In this regard, NRF ensures that the incoming generations of young researchers have a strong and holistic development-oriented training that is relevant to the needs of the society. They must be equipped with problem-solving and critical thinking skills, as well posses good communication and inter-personal skills. Beyond the graduate training acquired through university training that emphasize on a strong disciplinary pillar, the graduate output should additionally be exposed to training courses that emphasize the creation and application of knowledge, strengthening of skills and changing of mindsets so as to empower the researchers to initiate problem-solving research that will impact on socio-economic development.

 If necessary, research trainees will undertake an NRF sponsored 6-week residential coursework of modules relevant to research for health, before embarking on their respective research training programmes. Of these, Scientific Reading and Writing, Principles for Proposal Development and Grant Application, Bioethics, Project Management and Research Methodology are regarded as essential and therefore mandatory. If necessary, trainees may be asked to undertake any combination of the following:

·      Critical Thinking 


·      Good Laboratory and Research Practice 



·      Knowledge Translation 


·      The Science of Human Development 


·      The Cultural Practice of Science 


·      Writing and Publishing 


Trainees may enroll for additional specialized courses if necessary or essential. After completion of training, NRF will conduct a formal end-of-training debriefing where the beneficiaries are free to make their personal observations on the quality of the training programme and suggestions for improvement. 


Scientific Citizenry

NRF aims to develop a world-class research leadership in Kenya. NRF plans to achieve this by competitively recruiting young postgraduate-level scientists (nationally and from the Diaspora) and training them to take up a life-long careers in health research, and providing them competitive incentives and funding for them to systematically grow, develop, mature and able to work in functional research teams able to attract global research funding. This model can only succeed with through concerted investment in quality mentorship for the research trainees.

NRF, working closely with other institutions and university partners will organise Research Leadership and Mentorship Training, Proposal Writing and Project Management Workshops for researchers as part of research capacity building. The workshops will be open to both NRF-supported and other researchers interested in participating by paying a modest bench fee.

Research Career Development training are short-term fellowships for offered competitively to qualified Kenyan researchers (based in Kenya or working within the Diaspora) who wish to further develop their careers while undertaking research and training programmes. The grants aim at enabling successful applicants to obtain high-quality research training that will lay the foundation for a successful independent research career. The long-term aim is to build a critical mass of researchers undertaking relevant research for for the betterment of Kenyans.

 Within this context, the funding programme acknowledges the broad challenges of identifying, attracting and retaining highly qualified and skilled human resource within a dynamic and competitive environment. NRF considers postdoctoral and midcareer scientists as vital training positions in career development. 

 Research Career Development is offered in collaboration with national multi-institutional collaborative programmes.  The grants are competitively offered to support the development of new research ideas, or acquisition of specialized research/training skills in areas of national priority as a step towards a productive independent research career.

 The grantees selected for the programme are individuals who are committed to attaining the highest standards in research excellence, motivated to work in collaboration and partnership, and strive to be world leaders in their chosen fields of research. Selected grantees have a good track record of achievement; exhibit passion, enthusiasm and aptitude for a long-term career in research. These research fellows have a sound knowledge of the scientific aspects of their chosen research project, which should be relevant to the development needs of Kenya, focused and feasible within the fellowship timescale.

 Production of world-class research that addresses African research priorities through discourse and collaborative mentorship and supervision: NRF will facilitate younger researchers to benefit from experienced research supervision and mentorship, participation in tailor-made courses in strategic leadership, and efficient grants management provided in collaboration with partners, and our in-house strong scientific oversight. The outcome will be effective research leaders managing research hubs and groups, and publishing world-class papers that influence policies focused on our research priorities. 


 Strengthening of scientific research training and building career pathways for researchers: NRF will support grant schemes that are well designed and competitive, targeting researchers at all levels of training and experience. The best and brightest young researchers will be identified and supported to take up lifelong research careers under excellent training programs. They will be provided with competitive incentives to enable them to mature and join independent research teams able to attract global research funding. 


 Fostering mentorship, leadership and equitable collaboration in science, and engagement with public and policy stakeholders:. NRF will encourage and facilitate networking and collaboration. To bridge the gap between research and the lay public, NRF, in collaboration with its partners, will facilitate interactive media programs. Media and the scientific community will be regularly brought together in fora that promote evidence-based dialogue. NRF will support policy development capacity through workshops, internships and mentorship schemes, and will work with relevant partners closely to develop a conducive, responsive and world-class regulatory framework. This includes identifying research priorities and funding research intended to inform government policies and strategies or to promote the utilization of research findings for decision-making and practice.

Again a very interesting question How does research influence in terms of utility for society? It is closely related to the comments in another discussion network, regarding the influence that education has on the wealth of a country.

• In agreement with some of the opinions, the research has to be designed and planned according to the needs and demands of each society.
• While the Research Policies essentially seek to motivate and develop original, creative and innovative research lines; also have to be aligned to the aforementioned Policies, Norms, Economy, Tradition and Culture.

I don’t agree with such comments. I may assume that many projects are prepared for many vested interests like to get or give some degree to the students to get promotion in service, monetary gain etc. There are also some copy projects.

- The research is supposed to be oriented based on the requirements of the society, particularly in the context of third world.

- Publication of research papers should not be the main target of research. Publication is needed to communicate the new knowledge to the scientific community.

- The prime objective of research should be the solution of problems of the society, the day to day trouble of the common people for living . This approach will increase the importance of research to the people .

There are lot of problems related to the basic needs of the society. For instance,

• supply of drinking water,
• proper sanitary systems,
• energy (electricity), transition to renewable sources of energy
• pollution free residential areas (towns or modern villages),
• treatment of waste water and recycling

These problems invite research for cost effective solutions. I think that the first priority for funding research should be given to solve the societal problems.

Any machine, object, chemical compound or anything else built by man is based on the appropriate use of the laws of nature. So first of all it is necessary to know well well what are the laws of nature. For example, to build a watermill it is necessary to know the conservation of the quantity of motion in such a way as to be able to construct something that can transmit the momentum of the falling water to the millstone. So first of all it takes someone who, closed, isolated in a laboratory of some university alone or with others, studies how it is done and how the universe works, that is, someone who finds "the conservation of momentum". Theoretical research or pure research; carried out for the sole taste of doing research. In the same university or somewhere else in the world, there will be someone else who finds a way to exploit the laws of nature (found by those who do theoretical research) to the benefit of society by building and patenting water and wind mills, wind bridges, spaceships, airplanes. Applied research. If you do not believe me, try to build a working airplane without using the laws of aerodynamics. To do applied research it is necessary to have done a lot of "useless" theoretical research first.

Academic research is useful to society in several ways. When results are scientific and truthful that enable society to solve existing problems or inhance living standards and when they extend existing knowledge or brings new knowlegde to the galaxy of knowlegde so that they will be used for latter times when need arises. Research is a social imperative of an advancing society that enables to see better and effective possibilities beyond what is known. Society advances through science and science advances thrugh research, indicating the necessity of research.

Thank you so much Elangbam, my name is Leonardo. It is precisely in this way that theoretical research and applied research are the two sides of the same coin. Scientists (physicists, chemists, mathematicians, etc.) are in charge of discovering how the universe it is made and how it works. In other words they must look for the laws that govern nature (theoretical or basic research). Engineers use these laws to invent and build machines, infrastructures and anything else that is useful to man (applied research). Obviously this is a schematic and simplistic explanation. Because engineers often do excellent theoretical research and scientists do excellent applied research. For example, doctors, biologists, pharmacists etc. they generally do theoretical and applied research at the same time. But everyone must thank Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleev who built a table with all known and unknown elements.

This question is so relevant to the Accounting discipline. We have an established sub discipline of sustainability ( environmental and social) accounting which has so much potential to address practical issues, problems and of course solutions. Sustainability accounting needs exposure, let the world out there know its existence and potential!

Practical problems encountering during productivity cycles should be taken into the account while formulating research studies in that particular field.

Teachers right from the primary level to the university & also for the research advisory have to play an very important contribution as they have to carry out their action for teaching for the students in a systematic way under mode code & ethics .

If the teachers work with responsibility by keeping the principle of honesty ,integrity ,& sincerity they will certainly carry out their responsibility for the student for the study ,development , & his research program in a worthy mode .

If the performance of our education systems work in the said lines the research & other part of the program may prove to be fruitful for the society .

This is my personal opinion

• Engage in collaborations with industrial partners (favoring transfer of knowledge to practical applications).
• Orientate one’s research goals to match an area of societal importance (green gas reduction, nuclear waste storage, you name it).
• Communicate science to a wide public, whether it is my own research or the knowledge of my field in general (popular science). This includes writing articles in magazines, writing a blog, developing educational software, …
• Get involved in education science: contribute to my national society of physics and chemistry teachers, for example. Offer some software for high-school and university teachers to demonstrate concepts.
• Register as an expert with the nearest court of law.

Dear Prof. It's an important question and we should focus on the real issues and motivate our selves to introduce the new solution, despite our aspirations

- Articulate fundamental research with applied research

- Contact administrations/private firms/NGOs to work on issues that matter most to these organizations (work with master students if needed)

- Share the research results and make them available to practitioners, but also accessible in terms of language used ("translation" needed)

- Integrate practitioners in research (book chapters for instance)

- Involve participants in studies: there is a real need to improve science communication to stakeholders outside academia, as shown by the COVID crisis

The researchers should write practical researches related to actual problems facing the companies and the companies should support those resarchers financially and adopt their researchers recomendations and outcomes

A research is for the sake of research! Most of the researchers in the feild of business and management don't have any experience of doing business. Their research based on the Prior academic researches and trend.

Moreover, a businessman is not reading too many academic manuscripts published every year.

The contribution of academic research is questionable in the current situation.

In my opinion, initially doing research on topics related to the needs of, for example, a regional community. Then, making practical application of the results in order to contribute to remedy / improve / expand the solution of such need.

In my previous work (Al-Adeem, 2019), I suppose that I addressed this question:

“Doing research starts with the love and passion for discovering knowledge and uncovering the reasons causing the observed systematic behavior (i.e., a phenomenon)” (AlAdeem 2018, 4). Hence, accounting researchers are encouraged to pursue ideas they believe in and that contribute to accounting practice. If society as a whole and accounting practice in particular do not benefit from an accounting academic’s intellectual contribution, then one may need to rethink his or her career path."

The research should discuss topics that touch the needs of the community in order to be useful to the community.

Generally speaking:

By setting national research strategies that compromise two aspects : supporting research and linking this support to research conducted on local society issues

Firstly, our motivations for research in academics must change. Beyond promotions, research should be practical and deal with community-based issues. We focus more on the science of writing than on the value of the research to solve existing problems, both in the teaching of research and the evaluation of research work. Promotion guidelines should be revisited.

Secondly, there needs to be more collaboration among academics at the national, regional, university and departmental levels. We need to develop research agenda per time in order to chart a direction for research work and to consolidate resources and human effort expended on research.
