The overall concentration of ions, in this case specially H+ and OH- have a direct influence on the band gap of materials. For a charged of conducting material the counter ions of the fist solvation shell will have an intimate relation with electrons in the material.

The change in electron density caused by the approximation of an ion will have effects on the materials band gap.
