- Radiation hardening is not only about deep space circuits, but also needs to be done for high reliability circuits. Eg safety-related (brakes, steering) in cars, and numerous applications in airplanes.
- On earth, the main source of high-energy particles is alfa or beta-radiation as a result of radioactive decay of certain atoms in the mold compound.
- One way to deal with it, is to use 'low alfa' mold compound. Another is to electronically harden the system.
- For the memories, it is standard to use ECC (electronic error correction). So, if there is an error, electronic error correction will solve it.
- Other techniques (for processors) is lock-step. Meaning, there are 2 processors executing the same code. If there is any difference in result, an error is triggered. I think for deep space, they do this with 3 processors, and if there is any difference, they take the mayority result.
