Empirical IDF formula proposed by Sherman, is one of the very commonly used IDF relationship. There are three parameters in the formula, i.e, a, b, and c, which vary with the meteorological localities. The determination of the a, b, and c values can then be accomplished in a systematic manner by using the method of least squares and an optimization technique (e.g. steepest descent) for optimizing an unconstrained problem.
