Setareh Rahimi, the restart option is a very practical option in namelist. If the model blows up mid-way, it is the way to restart the run from termination time only, not to renew the run from the beginning. Here are some important tips:

1. You have to choose the restart interval in such a way that it creates only minimum files, otherwise, lots of restart files would be created. It will consume much space. You may keep your restart interval at 6 hourly. One important thing is that you have to keep "restart = .false.," in namelist.input until your model blows up.

2. After keeping restart 6 hourly, WRF would start creating restart files in multiple of 6 hours along with output file.

3. If the model blows up in mid way, then you need to change false to true in "restart = .true.," in namelist.input. You need to find the last restart file. That particular date and time mentioned in the last restart file is the time you have to insert in start_year, start_month, start_day, start_hour, start_minute in namelist.input. You also need to change the run_days, run_hours, run_minutes in namelist.input as per the remaining simulation time.

4. Then go for the WRF run again. It will take the ICs/BCs from restart files and resume the run.

5. Later you will find, that it creates different WRF output files. Finally, you have to merge these outputs if you want all time steps to be kept in a single NetCDF file.

I am trying to do the restart run for the wrf model which has blown up in the middle. I have seen your answer above, but I would like to know one more clarification before restarting a file.

Initially, I have submitted the job for wrf with restart = .false., restart_interval = 5000, in the namelist.input file. It abruptly stopped somewhere with no reason left behind in the rsl*. According to the user guide and in your post[You need to find the last restart file.], I got only wrfout_d02_2019-01-20_06:00:00 files and do not have any restart or wrfrst file in the outputs when the option was in restart = .false. So how can I find the last restart file ?

Attached screenshot where the wrfout has stopped at wrfout_d04_2019-01-20_08:00:00 when it supposed to run upto wrfout_d04_2019-01-23_06:00:00 along with the namelist.input file

Sorry for the delay, as I did not receive any notification for your query. Anyway, after looking at your namelist file, I got the following information:

restart_interval = 5000,

run_hours = 78,

As mentioned in my last response (point 1), you must choose the restart interval carefully. 5000 hours is the default input for namelist, where it is anticipated that the user does not want any restart files. You have chosen a restart interval of 5000 hours, whereas your simulation time is only up to 78 hours. How can you expect the model to create restart files? So, for example, if you want to create restart files at 6 hourly intervals, then provide 6 in the ''restart_interval' option.
