Hello, can I get help on the rate of ethrel to use in peanuts to break seed dormancy, Is it the best way to soak or just spray the seeds prior sowing?. Is convenient to use ethrel only or it works well with other growth regulators?
I don't know ethrel but have you tried smoke water? So easy to make yourself and promotes germination of many seeds. To use for controlling weeds simply apply with additional water, a huge percentage of the seed germinates and you destroy them. Then sow and apply again or soak your seeds and plant.
Just to be clear, the vacuum line is only to the top of the drum. Use an old vacuum cleaner. The manifold at the bottom is as long as you can fit and has many small holes drilled in it. You can have a drum with a removable lid (and therefore a circular manifold) or a tap top and bottom to fill and empty the drum.
Ethrel decomposes into ethylene at slight alcaline pH like in bicarbonate solution. Then you may treat sedds by Ethrel solution in disttllied water by immersion, until well wetted, and then drain the solution, take tge seeds add bisarbonate 5 g/i to wet seeds in a closed bag for 30 min. The solution of Ethrel can be used for other batches. https://ecommons.cornell.edu/bitstream/handle/1813/5149/FLS-118.pdf;sequence=1.
Sow seeds in usual sterile seeding mix. Water using a 1 mM solution of ethrel (1 mM = 1 millimolar = 1 gram powder in 6 litres of water). Enclose seedflat in plastic bag and place in a refrigerator for 2 weeks. Arrange for the refrigerator light to stay on 24 hours a day. Water with the ethrel solution if the sowing medium shows signs of drying. After 2 weeks, expose seedflat to room temperature and normal light. Germination should be complete in 2-4 weeks.
Recommendation for overcoming peanut seed dormancy in Thailand for farmer field planting and seed germination test in the laboratory both sand and role paper towel methods.
1. For field planting and lab germination test: Prepare solution of ethelene ai concentration of 2 x 10-3 M. This concentration is simply prepared from commercial from of ethephon *PGR 3% by using 9.5cc of ethephon *PGR 3% in 1,000 cc of water (or 0.95% solution of ethephon *PGR 3%). Ethephon *PGR 3% is commercial from of ethrel used for flowering stimulation of pineapple. Application method can be done both 1.1 spray the solution on the seed surface of shelled peanut seeds. Make sure every seed get wet thoroughly with the solution 1.2 If the large quantity of seeds such as 10 kg and difficult to spray thoroughly, farmers can immerge shelled peanut seeds under the solution instead.
After spraying or immerging seeds immediately spread seeds to air dry seeds. When seeds safe for field seeding, usually hand planting for example 1 hour after treating seeds, seeds are ready for planting. Planting seeds in the field or germinate seed in lab in the next day is also ok. This application work well with seeds to plant in the field and in the lab for standard germination test by sand method and rolled paper towel method without harmful to seedlings. This method is recommended method for farmer and lab use in Thailand for about 28 years (since about 1989).
2. For lab germination test as wettening agent: For rolled paper towel method of standard germination test, the solution of 0.0285% of ethelene *PGR 3% can be used instead of water as wettening agent for roll paper towel germination test of peanut seeds. However, this method may effect seed decay during germination as seeds contacted with solution to long, this can be overcome by transfer seeds and seedlings to regular water paper towels after 2-3 days after germination.
This method was from my experiments with a peanut variety of 10 weeks ripening period.
In an experiment (attached paper), ethephon applied in-furrow would seem to be the easiest way to break dormancy when dealing with treating a large volume of peanut seed.
