Recently, I came into contact with a new discipline named chemo-mechanical coupling. I found that chemo-mechanical coupling phenomena exist in many research areas, ranging from development of advanced batteries, biomechanical engineering, hydrogen embrittlement, and high temperature oxidation, etc. Although it is very important in engineering field, I can't know the main mechanisms of coupled chemical and mechanical interactions. Can you give me some suggestions? Such as, some related publications or research project. Thanks very much.
I can suggest a very nice recent review regarding modeling of electro-chemo-mechanical coupling for the very relevant use case of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Even if it is centered around the specific case of LIBs, the big picture is universal. Electrical or chemical driving forces lead to material transport (e.g. drift-diffusion) to a local material volume. The material in this region wants to expand, and if constrained by surrounding material mechanical stress builds up. As a consequence, if the stress is higher than the maximal material strength immediately locally e.g. a delamination or crack will appear, or if the load occurs cyclically, damage builds up gradually leading to failure initiation (e.g. crack or delamination), crack propagation, and finally loss of functional properties or structural integrity. So, stress can directly influence electical-chemical properties, e.g. the diffusion constants and ionic mobilities, or by degrading the material.
