I wish to know how to trap an intermediate which is formed during the course of reaction. My focus is on reactions using organolithium compounds. For e.g. if I am performing alkylation of any carboxylic acid using Butyllithium, so is it possible to trap the intermediate formed after deprotonation of acid by lithium? How to preserve it? Can I check NMR for that? I want to check whether or not deprotonation is complete or not.
Any references will be greatly helpful.

Actually, I am trying to isolate the carboxylate anions, enolate anions, etc. (mostly anions) and then treat them separately with different metal cations in order to make a system of multi-ligand-mixed-metal. For e.g. I have a compound i.e. 4-hydroxyhexanoic acid and when I treat this chemical with an organolithium alkylating (for e.g. MeLi) agent it gives an anion which I want to trap before hydrolysis. The problem is that this type of anion is not easy to stabilize and later when I wish to treat it with different kinds of metals to perform metal exchange with Lithium, I am not sure how effective that can be. So I seek you suggestions on same. How can I trap the intermediate? Can I just take the intermediate in a syringe from a reaction flask under inert atmosphere and pour it into another flask and keep it at low temperature? Or do I need to add any other stabilizer, etc.? Or I have to perform next step immediately? These are some of doubts pertaining in my mind.
