The Bard of Avon is relevant as a litterateur for all languages and regions. The texts are rich with rhetoric and appraisal which every student would like to decipher. But the problem lies in explaining the phrases with multi-layered meanings which a student of English Native Language would appreciate more than a bilingual student whose mother tongue is not English or he is not as good in English as a first language speaker
Generally speaking, teaching poetry in L2 contexts has long been a challenging task and a very difficult undertaking. In such settings, the teacher should adopt a bottom up approach by first focusing on poetic devices and literary conventions such as imagery, symbolism, metonymy, etc. Next, the teacher should paraphrase the poem to help students to get the main idea. Subsequently, referring to a poetic experience in the students' L1 overlapping with the message of the sonnet can also have a great pay off.
