its better to ask to yourself. People can suggest you lot of things according to their experience and expertisation. But nobody can tell you what is valuable for you without knowing you. Believe in yourself, Be positive.

It’s obvious that different stretches of our time can be more or less valuable to us. For example, an hour in which our mind is sparkling and sharp, and coming up with brilliant ideas and insights, is usually more valuable to us than an hour in which we feel lethargic, dull-minded, or barely moping through life.

In this two-part series, I detail the top ways to make your time more valuable. In this Part 1, I focus on 5 ways to make your time more valuable to the person who matters most—yourself.

Few skills will have more of a direct impact on how much money you earn, and your success in your business and career, than learning how to make your time more valuable to yourself and others. So, here are:

5 Ways to Make Your Time More Valuable to Yourself

1. Develop Better Nutritional Habits

Few factors impact the quality of your mental clarity—and thus the quality of the time you experience—more than the way you eat. Stuff your body with refined sugars and starches all day long and you will experience your mind as foggy and sluggish. Nourish yourself with protein, fibrous carbs, nutrient-dense fruits and veggies, and high-quality fats, and you will experience your mind as sharp and crystalline.

Here’s the interesting thing about nutrition. You can actually train your senses to respond more positively to healthier food. The difference between someone who eats a fast-food burger, a plate of fries and a soda for lunch, versus someone who eats a meal-sized salad with lean protein, whole grains and a glass of water, is not that the latter person was born with some pleasure-denying instinct to deprive herself of the joys of fast food and soda.

Rather, she trained herself to respond positively to foods that fill her with energy and zest, much as an athlete trains herself to respond positively to the experience of feeling fit, tight and powerful in her body.

The first way to train yourself to respond positively to healthier foods is to educate yourself about what’s possible. I highly recommend The Ultra-Mind Solution: Fix Your Broken Brain By Healing Your Body First by Mark Hyman, M.D. This book changed my life. It got me excited about—i.e., changed my taste for—foods that helped my mind stay sharp, clear and focused.

I’m not going to pretend as though changing your taste towards healthier foods will be cost-free. Like everything else in this article, it’s an investment—of time, money and effort. But it’s an investment that will pay off in you experiencing your time as more focused, energized, and valuable.

2. Get Clear On Where You’re Headed in Life

Real quick, tell me: why did you go to work today?

Because you had to? Had to, because why? Because you wouldn’t get a paycheck otherwise? And why do you want your paycheck? So you can keep subsisting long enough to go to the office for another paycheck?

The less clear we are on where we’re headed in life—on why we’re doing what we’re doing—the more it all seems rather pointless. And, if our efforts feel ultimately pointless, then surely the hours within it will feel pointless and low-value as well.

Think of that word, “pointless.” Without point. What is the point of your efforts? After quite a bit of bumbling and stumbling, I’ve come to know mine: I write books which—I hope—will change people’s lives.

That’s a “point” which is pretty inspiring to me. It gets me out of bed each day, gets me to sit long hours crouched in front of a screen, tapping away at a little board full of buttons with squiggly marks on them.

What is the point of your efforts? That’s a question only you can answer. But I assure you: if you don’t have an answer, or if your answer is not satisfying to you, then your time will not feel very valuable to you. An hour spent one way will feel just as valuable (or just as non-valuable) as an hour spent some other way, with no method for discriminating between the two. Because, when you don’t know where it’s all headed, then it’s all headed in the same place: nowhere.

In turn, if you have a clear vision of the point of your efforts, and you’re incredibly inspired by that point, then you will make strong value judgments about how you spend your own time. An hour spent in service of your point will feel highly valuable to you.

(This is not to say you must always be working. Learning how and when to unplug, recharge, rest, rejuvenate and just have fun is a vital component of achieving any life purpose.)

If you are clear about what the point of it all is, then you will become obsessed about spending your time either in ways that directly serve that point, or that recharge your batteries. The latter definitely includes partying and enjoying life. But all within a life that feels to you as though it exists for some reason.

The more clear your picture of that reason, and the more that picture moves and excites you, the more joyous each hour spent painting that picture will feel to you. And you’ll literally begin to place more value on your time, because your time (even time spent recharging and restoring) is all going towards painting that beautiful picture. Any other expenditure of time will feel like waste to you, and you’ll guard zealously against waste.

There are a zillion books and resources for finding a sense of purpose and point in your life. I highly recommend The Writer’s Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers. Ostensibly a book for just writers, anyone can get great value from it—writer or not—because it is the most clear and simple exposition I’ve seen of Joseph Campbell’s masterful ideas on life quest and journey; it will forever alter your perspective on life, and will help you see your own life as a quest that you create, every single day. The Passion Test by Janet Attwood and Chris Attwood is also a valuable classic in the field of finding your mission.

As a man, I have found the (provocatively-titled) The Way of the Superior Man to be helpful. My wife Jena has received great value in finding her direction, as a woman, from Mama Gena’s School of Womanly Arts: Using the Power of Pleasure to Have Your Way With the World. I know many women whose lives were transformed by that book.

3. Sleep

Which feels more valuable to you, an hour in which you’re energized, charged up, and alert, or an hour in which all you can think about is diving under your covers?

It’s so obvious that sleep improves the quality of our time, yet so many people seem to prefer a higher quantity of lower-value waking hours (i.e., not enough sleep, and feeling utterly exhausted during the day), to a lower quantity of higher-quality waking hours (i.e., sleeping longer, and feeling refreshed during the day).

I’ll take quality of time over quantity any day. I’d rather have one slice of fine cheese than a room full of Cheez-Its, and I’d rather have one hour of rested, alert, energized attention than eight hours of time in which I’m fighting the ten-pound weights on my eyelids.

A pair of excellent personal development books make a powerful case for the business value of sleep: The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy, Not Time, Is the Key to High Performance and Personal Fulfillment by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz, and and The Way We’re Working Isn’t Working: The Four Forgotten Needs That Energize Great Performance by Tony Schwartz. These are the two best books on productivity I’ve ever read (and neither one mentions to-do lists, time-blocks, or calendars!)

4. Get Control Of Your Relationship to Caffeine

For many people, the answer to the problem mentioned in #3 above is: coffee! If you’re feeling sluggish, down or foggy, well, just brew up a pot of life’s greatest tonic-in-a-bean.

I’m quite a fan of legal stimulants myself, particularly when it comes in the form of dark chocolate, which contains caffeine-like theobromine (my favorite: Gnosis Chocolate’s raw cacao bars—yumm!) and also Guayakí’s yerba mate shots.

But like many good things in life, the path to happiness lies in moderation. If you require caffeine to stay alert and clear-minded—as much of the American workforce does—then you’ve got a problem.

This is a highly unscientific description, but in my experience, caffeine acts kind of like a credit card for energy. It doesn’t actually produce energy (just like credit cards don’t produce more money), it simply allows you to consume more of your store of energy faster, now. But then you have to pay it back (often with “interest!”) when you crash later.

Many people simply drink more caffeine at that point, going into greater and greater “energy debt,” and they have no idea how exhausted they are until the weekend comes, or (if they also consume lots of caffeine through the weekend) when their body finally says “enough!” and have a nervous meltdown.

Caffeine can be a great tool when you’re feeling unfocused and you really must focus now. But ultimately, relying on “credit cards” of energy is not a path to success. You want to experience energy sustainably throughout the days, weeks, and months. Working on the other steps outlined in this article will help you get off the caffeine treadmill and will help you actually gain energy in your life, rather than simply expending more of it faster.

5. Exercise To The Point Where You Forget Your Worries

A huge breakthrough in my relationship to exercise occurred when I stopped trying to exercise a certain number of minutes, or miles, or reps or whatever. Instead, I would exercise (my favorite forms—salsa dancing and Rollerblading) to the point where I got my mind completely off the day-to-day stresses and worries of my life.

All of the sudden, exercise stopped being a chore—another thing to cross off my already terrifying to-do list—and instead it became a wonderful escape, almost a mini-vacation each day, which I look forward to immensely.

You know that feeling of charge and focus you feel after a great session of exercise? That is what it feels like when your time is valuable to you all the time. Follow the five steps I’ve outlined in this article, and you can have that feeling throughout the day. You will literally have made your time more valuable to yourself. And what could be more valuable than that?
