Currently, i am simulating compaction of deformable bodies using a rigid bodies (represent as punch). Since, my aim is to reduce the mesh size on the deformable bodies, i currently use abaqus/explicit to overcome the issue of mesh refinement.
To displace the punch downward, i am using boundary condition of 10 mm (distance displacement) with smooth amplitude . However, i get the error message of :
Error in job: The elements contained in element set
ErrElemExcessDistortion- Step1 have distorted excessively
There is only one excessively distorted element
Abaqus/Explicit Analysis exited with an error - Please see the status file for possible error messages if the file exists.

In non-subroutine models (especially UMAT subroutines), this error can occur due to poorly defined physical behaviors in the property module. If you use Abaqus from version 6.13 or higher, when you encounter this error, before you make any modifications to the model, you can use the path:
Simulia/abaqus/6.13(or 14 or….)/code/bin
Find the mkl_avx2.dll file and rename it to mkl_avx2.dll.11.0.0.1. This change does not have a negative effect on the software.If after this change of name, you are submitting the corresponding job again.To determine the cause of the error, you can add and adjust different settings, or change the numbers entered and check the result.

What is the velocity of your punch? A typical mistake in explicit analyses is the application of very small step times to reduce the total calculation time. But it could be a problem with the wave propagation in your material, generating deformations only in the nearest elements contacting with your punch.
Also, it could be possible that you have only one element distorted because when it reaches non-acceptable distorsion values, the analyses is stopped, but if it could continue simulating you would have many more elements distorted.

I am just applying the displacement of 10, there is no velocity magnitude. I will look more details on the step times
If the step time is too small in relation with the imposed displacement, it is possible that you have near impact velocities and the strain waves have not enough time to transmit the stresses and deformations over the whole part.

Generally displacement loading should not be a problem while using explicit analysis compared to abaqus standard considering such excessive distortion errors. From my experience I would suggest the main culprit here may be improper material definition or constitutive model definition. Explicit provides the option of distortion control in element definition please consider that too.
