Hello all, I am looking to simulate a heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) with energy harvesting devices for my research. The network should consist of at least two classes of wireless sensors: a set of low-energy normal sensors and another set of overlay sensors, which could be high-energy or preferably energy harvesting sensors. The data collected by these sensors should be transmitted to an external fusion node. My goal is to vary properties such as clustering and study network performance and lifetime. Currently, I am using the NetSim simulator, but I welcome directions on using any other simulator as well.
- Sensor devices in NetSim support a battery model with associated parameters that can be set differently for each device. For configuring different classes of sensors, the initial energy level can be set differently. The energy harvesting option can be enabled/disabled based on the class to which a sensor belongs to.
- Network traffic can be configured such that sensors periodically send packets to a sink node or a fusion node. Routing between the sensors and fusion node can be done using routing algorithms such as DSR, AODV, ZRP, and OLSR by default. Sensors can be grouped into clusters based on the nearby overlay sensor which will act as the cluster head. The cluster heads can be configured to collect packets from the sensors and forward them to the fusion node.
Clustering will require some kind of static routing to be set up between the nodes and the cluster heads. If the clustering is not changing dynamically - that is if the sensors are not mobile - then this can be set up initially prior to the start of the simulation.
