I am planning on applying for a PhD in the US. Although there are ample resources online to select a suitable university, i am feeling overwhelmed. can anybody provide assistance on how to narrow down the search for selecting a university? It would be more helpful if there is a pakistani/indian out there who could relate to the issues faced by like population and Climate/campus life of the students etc...
Hi, I am not Indian but perhaps can pseak a bit to this. The greatest advice given to me was to choose somewhere pleasant. You will be spending 5 plus years there. So think, where would you like to live? What sort of climate do you want or not want? Is the cost of living there expensive? Also consider your competitiveness. Although you may have a place in mind, be sure that you resume will allow you to be competitive there because it is a long and difficult process getting in. Also consider whether you want to go the counseling or clinical route as these programs will emphasize different things. This is where I would begin.

Cory Cobb thanks for the response. The part of the world that i come from is dry and cold. I don't mind the cold in fact i love snowfall, but i would like to live in a place which is green. At least in summers. can you suggest a suitable state in the US?
Well, there are dozens of states that fit the description you are looking for. I would say that most states have green outside of Winter time. So I think you will likely fit in most places. However, I would also consider cost of living as this can change dramatically form state to state. For example, in much of the south you buy a nice house for $250,00 whereas in the North and near the coasts (and some places in between) a similar house would cost you well over $700,000. This is important given that fact that you will also be paying to live through graduate school. Again, you should consider you resume, how competitive you are, and select schools that where you would be a nice fit. After all, just because you find a state or city that you like does not mean that you will get into the school of your choice. Most people advise applying to as many PhD programs as you can to optimize your outcomes. Cheers.
