For instance, I am working on Halophytes and willing to check its different activities. I need to understand the reason of selection specific strain for one's studies. 1. always go with an establish model if there is one. So in your case, if anyone has done anything with halophytes in mice, that's what you go with.
2. what is your experimental goal, what you are trying to test. For mice, you have to decide whether to use in-bred or out-bred mice. Most start with in-bred, because they are clonal, there are a lot of advantages. But each clone has their own specific immune responses to different pathogens/agents/etc. So... you have to know something about what you are trying to test, and what exactly you want to test.
