In order to run a ductile damage simulation and determine stress triaxiality and failure strain for AISI 304L, we need to test several notched flat specimens of the same material. How can we select these specimens? I mean parameters like thickness and notch radius?
We use a plate with thickness of 12 mm for forming simulation

The stress triaxiality around the notch depends not only on the notch geometry but also on the deformation behavior of the material of interest (AISI 304L in your case). The usual procedure consists in first carrying some simple tests (e.g. uniaxial tension, uniaxial compression) to (i) select an appropriate constitutive model and (ii) identify the corresponding material parameters. Then, you can run some FE simulations for different notch geometries to determine the stress triaxiality for each geometry. Usually, a "nice" notch geometry is one for which:
- stress triaxiality is almost constant during deformation
- stress triaxiality is almost uniform in the vicinity of the notch
Once you are satisfied with your geometries, you can prepare your specimens, test them, observe where ductile fracture took place and find the corresponding stress triaxiality from your FE simulations.
