I think it depends on the purpose of simulation. For example is it for peak flow (flood protection) or volume (water supply)? Similarly, you can calibrate for either of these types or maybe conjunctive use if that is the purpose.

I think yopu also need to think about representativity. Individual events normally shoud represent longer typical periods. Such may be dry period/wet period, different types of antecedent precipitation/soil/vegetation conditions, human effect/natural conditions etc.

If you are focusing in floods, the following papers may help you. "The Influence of the Annual Number of Storms on the Derivation of the Flood Frequency Curve through Event-Based Simulation" has a criteria to separate storms from continuous rainfall series, while "Towards Operational Guidelines for Over-Threshold Modeling" mentions several approaches to separate flood events from continuous flow series.
