How to search for any genes origin?

I might sound childish but I want to study how a particular gene got evolved in Glycine max (i.e. higher organism). How to find its lower plant relatives in which it might have appeared first in the evolutionary timeline? I tried the general approach of 'BLAST the sequence' to find conserved sequences in other species but it dose not give me a satisfactory result. Is it possible to trace back the genes origin how it might have evolved over the time? And how? Dose anyone know any good book for the beginners in phylogenetic analysis? Any insights are welcome.
