Today we need to think about our planet earth. As we know "Charity begins at home". So, being an individual how can we locally participate and act effectively to save our planet?

Great question and terrific thoughts so far by others. Part of the answer lies in recognising that nature is imperfect and continually evolving. In this respect all humans are no different to nature. At a global scale we need to jointly acknowledge our individual imperfections as a species, our faults, our strengths and above all else our differences. This might be a good start to co-habiting the Earth we share with other organisms, each of which has equal right to continue to exist. Ricardo Ojima is spot-on in saying Earth will continue to exist into the future. The real question for me is do humans want to be part of the Earth into the future and, if so, what kind of Earth do we want to leave for our children, their children and so on an so forth? Looking across the planet I am not sure we do. Put another way, if we do we have a terrible way of showing it ....
Our planet does not need to be saved, it will continue to exist regardless of what we do. What we need (or not) to save (or change) is the way of life of our society.

Communication of various problems leading to destruction of our planet is necessary to the society, not only urban but also rural. Therafter awareness regarding the problems and possible solutions. Thse could help us protect our planet.
Yes, communication is key, particularly with the current and future generations of young people that go on to pursue scientific endeavour - whatever that endeavour might be. I am pretty sure my children get inspiration from the environment they live in. They just need the courage, humility and support to take future challenges head-on with positive attitude. It's also a two-way street for us. Our children should be able to express themselves and be heard by their parents about what kind of world they want to live in and be part of. The future lies in the ether between being told what to do, listening to others and actually hearing ....
The Millenium Ecosystem Assessment presented 4 scenarios for the furure, and the only of them that improved the situation of the Ecosystem Services was the one called "Adaptative Management" that in concrete means that the solution is at the level of landscapes/territories and devolving resources, decisions and responsibilities to the people in a territory. There are many good examples of the application of the "Adaptative management" like is the case of Model Forests. Move over doom and gloom, there is a new environmental movement in town. Earth optimists say focusing on small successes is the way forward.
