I am about to build an electrospinning system using >20kV and I want to make sure that I will be able to operate this thing safely. Someone mentioned that to discharge this, I would need to make a simple device where when in contact with the spinner, a conductor touches a solenoid, and when pulled back, releases electrical contact.
Anyone have any idea what this is or if its necessary for me to be able to safely ground the electrospinning collector?
I used an earthed stick in the previous system that I setup. You will need long stick made of strong insulator (e.g. PP or PE or other plastics) and at the far end connect the earthed wire with a screw to it. For earthing I connected the other end of the wire to the earthed part of high voltage or try other methods. As long as it is earthed it will be enough. For discharging completely, after turning off the high voltage, touch the positively charged needle / spinneret with the earthed stick and it will discharge instantaneously. If the amount of accumulated charge is high you might see a spark and a loud noise depending on the type of high voltage supply you are using.
