I am doing research in computational orthopedic biomechanics.
I am trying to develop new design concept for actabular cup precisely used in dysplasia by using alloys. For this I require commercially available implant geometry for my research purpose only. I tried to extract it from publications/patents but failed to get exact information.
Please help to how to get this geometry/drawing from implant manufacturing companies.
Send mail to at least 50 companies through enquiry by their official websites. But no response form manufacturer side.

I think that the best way you can follow is to contact an orthopedic doctor and ask to him if can give several of this implants, in order to make a reverese engineering operation for reconstructing the geometry. Manufacturer never gives the geometries of thei implants!!!
Follow ORTHO residents of the HOSPITAL, make up communication and follow up as they check the pre-op geometry and select proper implant then oder to the company .
I agree with Alessandro, you should try to reverse engineer them through CAD modelling or scanning them in CT or using laser scanning procedures. Alternatively, try to establish a collaboration with a group that has used a similar implant or approach the company directly, sign a non'disclosure agreement, tell them you will be providing them with valuable marketing data and publications, cross your fingers and hope for the best
The best method is to acquire implants from hospitals which has been removed from patients due to loosening or infection. Then reverse engineer. The other way is to get your department to buy implant from market.

I agree with Alessandro. Reverse engineering is a good way. However, depending on how you digitize the implant geometry you will get higher or Lover deviations from the real geometry. I experienced thet white light Scanning is quite accurate.

Allesandro and the others are right. Our hospital has worked in direct and inimate contact with the company W.Link. And they would never give such information, as each of those companies fear more competitors.
Ask for example large alloplasty centers, who have an archive of explanted specimens. I kno of the ENDO-Klinik/Hamburg, who in my time there had an archive of hundreds of such components. If they still keep this archive, they might be helping you. Ask Dr. Plutat there for example.

I am writing letter to various hospitals in INDIA regarding implant acquisition of explanted specimens or its CT scans for reverse engineering. Generally in our city varanasi, India I contacted to many orthopedic hospitals but here bipolar hip replacement is in practice. So they failed to provide explanted cup.
It is a problematic task because the companies are not inclined to provide exact data for a given model of interest. Generally, it is considered to be a firma's secret. Another possibility is to set up a collaboration contract between the clinic and the company for research on the matter of mutual interest. The results could be beneficial for both parties at some conditions.
Reverse engineering is not always necessary since the acetabular cup geometry is not so complex (differently from hip stems): usually the inner surface is spherical , and its radius is usually declared by the producer, so you need just to determine its height. The outer surface may be spherical as well, or a conical frustum. The true problem is getting the physical model: you need to be in touch with hospitals or with an orthopaedic surgeon. Thankyou Elisabetta M Zanetti for your support. I already developed the solid model for acetabular cup by public information provided by companies. Exactly problem is that what is the exact positions of holes in posterior quadrant of cup.
I already tried the model accessed from grabcad but there is no exact information that in what reference this model was developed . It will be doubtful for this model to take as reference.
There are different types of acetabular cups in terms of screw holes, ranging from no hole cups to multihole cups. I presume you are mentioning about the sector hole cups, which has three holes. The position of these three holes is dependent on the position of insertion, posterior, superior or postero-superior. Different manufacturers position these holes differently, though all of them are within one quadrant of the cup.
