I am using Cu2O as an oxidizing agent in a reaction, however in the procedure given for this synthesis, the author simply mentioned "filter the product to remove Cu2O ". I am wondering how can I do this step?
It is greatly appreciated if someone can help me with this.
You have to filter the product solution via Filterpaper or fine porous glass frit (http://www.duran-group.com/en/products-solutions/laboratory-glassware/products/glass-filtration-apparatus-and-accessories/filter-funnel.html).
If the cu2O goes through your glasfilter you can use filter aid (ceolite).
I agree with Jurgen that the author likely meant celite on a sintered glass funnel. If copper persits in the filtrate or workup amines can be used to remove the residual. I have personnaly had success Aqueous ammonia or EDTA solutions.
Filter it over celite. This procedure will help you to remove all inorganic impurities from the reaction mixture with the help of organic solvent
Just add some celite to the reaction mixture with stirring, and set a short chromatografic column, a couple of cm long. Then pour the reaction mixture plus celite, you can use a Pasteur pipette to help you, elute with an organic solvent right into a flask, and evaporate the eluate.
If you want to reduce the loss of material, just put a small ball of cotton in the bottom of a glass funnel and filter through the cotton ball. You can rinse with solvent and loss by capillary effect (filter paper) is zero.
I agree with Jürgen Wintner, any inert filter will basically work in this case, just make sure particle size isn't too small for your filter.
