My favorite method to read articles in hard copy journals is not efficient any longer. The reading articles online in PDF is much more efficient, but it has a severe drawback. The critical part of the reading the article is to go fast to the reference part that usually is at the end of the article. Going back and forth is time-consuming and annoying. Some old journal shows current references in the bottom margin of pages, and it helps. It would be nice if I could hover over the reference number in the PDF text and to see the reference on the same page side margin. And if I click on the reference number, the reference appears in the margin and I could go to the referenced article through the cross-reference link. Unfortunately, this PDF does not exist. I question if someone knows the efficient method of reading scientific papers.
