I am doing some literature review to better understand the processes governing the biological fixation of nitrogen by non-symbiotic micro-organisms (associative, endophytic, free-living...).
I am not interested in symbiotic relations like legumes (which have their use), but rather to find solutions to promote this fixation throughout the cultivation (perhaps through composting?).
So it could be in the field or in a compost pile on the farm.
Could you share some insights?

Article Asymbiotic nitrogen fixation
There are many factors that control the non-symbiotic nitrogen fixation, among them: 1) guarantee a source of energy for the diazotrophs, 2) an oxygen level that does not affect the activity of the nitrogenase enzyme, 3) absence of fertilizer residues that inhibit the process, presence of plants with radical system that guarantees a good amount of exudates for diazotrophs, 4) presence of cofactors (trace elements) of nitrogenase, 5) adequate level of phosphorus in the soil. All this can apply for both the native population and the introduced inoculants
Increasing soil organic matter by what ever means possible is the short answer, and will provide for the factors Nelson has listed

Non-symbiotic micro-organisms require nutrients for their growth and multiplication as well as for nitrogen fixation so if we provide organic matter to the soil will be beneficial. Adding these microorganism as inoculum to the soil also be helpful.

G diazotrophicus is an endophyte seemingly capable of fixing large amounts of nitrogen. So far I've only seen application in tropical and sub-tropical crops. Innoculating plants is a bit of a challenge though.
We can promote Nitrogen fixation through biofertilizers application to the soil or inoculation with nitrogen fixing microorganusms (Azospirillum sp. etc).

Good question, in rice as non legume plant, we can improve nitrogen fixation in paddy soils by biofertilizers to promote soil microorganisms colonization in rizhosphere area by different strains as Azospirillum, cyanobacteria, PGPR and ......etc.
