I have adopted green synthesis pre-treatment method for cellulose extraction. I got cellulose microflakes or microfibrils in the range of 50 to 90 micron. i need to powder them for my application but cannot use acid hydrolysis as well. Tried mechanical grinding but it is just squeezing the fibre not powdering.
Did you dry your sample before mechanical grinding? You could take an oven dry sample and process it through a wiley mill or a ball mill.
yes i dried and grinded the sample. but in that also it was not getting powdered. Then i proceeded with lignin removal using green solvents and H2O2 treatment (bleaching). After that i dried it in hot air oven at 50 degree. The end result i got is a white flakey cellulose of uneven size. I need that tobe in powdered form.
will ball milling reduce the crystallinity of the cellulose. I read so in some papers Kurt Haunreiter
Yes - ball milling can. But I believe you would have to process freeze dried fibers to achieve a change in crystallinity. I'm not sure.

Adding concentrated sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) to cellulose fibers will cause them to dissolve due to hydrolysis, breaking down the cellulose structure. If liquid nitrogen is then poured on the resulting solution, it will cause the solution to freeze and become brittle, potentially shattering if disturbed. you can easily crush it then in mortal pestle to make powder.
yeah acid hydrolysis i have read in many papers but i need an acid-free method
