Dear Colleagues,
we need to prepare mixture of water and salt with mass density > 1.6 g/ml. Lowe et al. JFM 2005 "The non-Boussinesq lock-exchange problem. Part 1. Theory and experiments" used sodium iodide, which is a quite expensive salt. Is anybody aware of a cheaper (non toxic, secure etc.) salt that we could use for our purposes?

Sodium iodide is probably a relatively cheap choice. Especially if you want non-toxic compounds.
If you can work at slightly elevated temperature, you might take sugar (at ambuent temperature the solutions are probably too viscous.
Thanks to All, I have recently experimented Potassium Diphosphate, up to 1.7 maximum relative density, non toxic (it is a food additive) and less expensive than Sodium Iodine (10,00 €/kg and much less for large quantities).
