I am trying to obtain Ru 3d XPS spectra of samples with RuO2 content of 0.1 ~ 0.3%. But due to the overlapping of the C 1s region and maybe the low content as well, the Ru 3d5/2 peak was almost not detectable and not good for analysis. Does anybody know how to obtain Ru 3d5/2 peak with better quality? I attached a picture of my spectra with the Ru 3d5/2 region which was only able to be seen after a 10 times magnification.
You are better recording the Ru3p peaks also with sufficient signal to noise (i.e. many scans). You can do the same to the Ru3d region, BUT of course then intesnity wont improve as its related to the concentration of the element - but the signal quality will improve
Take a look at my paper on fitting (uses CasaXPS, not newer version have different parameters, so ask if the fit paramters throw an error)

David J. Morgan , nice works in the references you mentioned above. Maybe it is a good idea to go for the Ru 3p signals instead, as they are not overlapping with other signals, but the chemical shifts are smaller on the 3p compared to the 3d ...

David J. Morgan Thank you for the references you recommended. We have tried to collect Ru 3p spectra but unfortunately, we have TiO2 in our samples (with great amount) which led to the overlap of Ru 3p peaks by Ti 2p region. Is there any other way to analyze Ru valance state in this case?
