Saliva can either be collected "whole", as in from all salivary glands (minor and major) or can be isolated from one particular gland, usually the parotid gland, using a device such as the Stensen's cup.
In addition, saliva can be collected as "stimulated" usually with sterile marbles/wax/citric acid or "unstimulated"
So you may collect stimulated whole saliva using a sterile marble for a fixed time, say 5 min, and work out a stimulated whole saliva flow rate.
