To simulate a fibre pushout test of a carbon fibre–epoxy system in ANSYS Workbench using a 2D axisymmetric model, start by modelling the geometry with a clear representation of the fibre, matrix, and a thin interfacial layer to represent the cohesive zone. Assign appropriate material properties: linear elastic for the carbon fibre, elastic or elasto-plastic for the epoxy matrix, and define a cohesive zone model (CZM) for the interface using parameters like normal/tangential stiffness, maximum traction, and fracture energy. Apply a bonded contact between the cohesive layer and both the fibre and matrix. To simulate interfacial debonding followed by frictional sliding, use cohesive elements for initial bonding and introduce a frictional contact pair (with a defined friction coefficient) that activates once cohesive failure occurs; this often requires a two-step analysis or advanced contact settings where debonding behaviour is defined. Boundary conditions should fix the bottom of the matrix, apply a vertical displacement or load to the fibre, and enforce symmetry along the axis. For meshing, use a very fine mesh along the fibre–matrix interface to accurately capture stress gradients and debonding behaviour, while employing a coarser mesh away from the interface to reduce computation time. A mapped or structured mesh is ideal for regular geometries, and mesh refinement zones can be controlled using sizing functions or strategically splitting the geometry.
